What do you think of when you hear the word meditation? Do you imagine a yogi sitting on top of a mountain doing nothing except chanting mantras and doing breathing exercises all day? That’s what I used to think. The truth is, meditation is a lot easier than you think. You don’t have to dedicate your life to it and you don’t need to be a “spiritual” person to start doing it. And if the next thing you’re thinking is “I don’t have the time”, well then let me tell you this: When you incorporate daily meditation into your life, you’ll actually free up more time in your day. How is this possible?
When you quiet your busy mind and meditate, you put your brain into an alpha wave state. This is the same state your brain goes into when you are just about to fall asleep. It’s that moment between being awake and asleep, when you are about to nod off and feel yourself completely relaxed. It typically lasts only a few minutes before you fall into the next stage of sleep. On the other hand, when you meditate, you can put yourself into this relaxed alpha state for as long as you’d like. And it is actually proven that 10-15 minutes of meditating is equal to 1-2 hours of restful sleep.
I learned a simple way to do this 10-minute meditation a while ago during a personal development course I was taking. I was completely blown away at how relaxed I felt after. I loved it so much that I started doing it every night and have been doing it ever since. Before doing this meditation, I had always had trouble getting restful sleep and would often stay in bed for up to 9 hours a night, while still feeling groggy in the morning. The morning after I first did this meditation, also known as a relaxation cycle, I found that I felt fully rested and alert even though I had only slept for 7 hours. I had immediately freed up an extra 2 hours in my day to do whatever I wanted!
This relaxation cycle can also be done at any time of the day. If you notice yourself feeling drowsy, stressed out, or lacking energy, you can easily take 10 minutes out of your day to do this and recharge yourself. It seems like people everywhere these days are getting busier and busier. Stress is an epidemic and it’s taking a huge toll on our health. Many people think that if they’re not doing something or thinking about what to do every moment of the day, they’re not being effective. This is not true. When you take the time to slow down, relax and clear your mind, you actually become more effective. By giving your mind and body a rest, you make room for creative solutions to appear and as a result, you get more done in less time. You waste less time worrying. And if you think that you’re resting when you’re sleeping at night, think again. Your mind is active 24 hours a day. The only time you really give it a rest is when you consciously slow down your thoughts and arrive in the present moment. And meditation is the perfect way to get there.
